The Train and the Transvestite (is that okay to say? I went to prep school i don''t know)
I had the urge to (for some reason) talk about the power of powerful lighting.
A lot of battery powered lights, ie. "mobile" lighting, give the shooter a lot of advantage and i won't leave the house/studio without them on any (ANY) assignment. Even if I know there are working plugs, I bring battery driven lighting. The uses are innumerable: you can add light anywhere in an architectural photograph, you can put a kicker behind a subject outdoors and not worry about having to photoshop out the wires from a mains driven pack, you can CARRY and point the strobe with your left hand (batt pack slung around your shoulder) or have an assistant carry one on a pole and drop it into the middle of cocktail conversations at big events while you snap your fine camera at the subject. It can be radio slaved, IR slaved or light slaved, so if you have a dorky dinky little "supplemental" flash on your camera (witness the flagship camera, the Hasselblad, and its TOTALLY DORK ETTA FLASH).
Back again- you can USE the dorky little flash to slave drive the battery powerpack and OVERWHELM YOUR VICTIM WITH SUBLIME AND USEFUL LIGHT.
Now don't forget that. Yes, you forget your pocket wizards. No problemo, The dorketta little flash mounted on your digital back wearing $50,000 digital camera can
STILL SNAP REMOTE FLASH!!!
Wow.
And all I thought I was getting was a promised 2 years of corporate support.
Yes, battery packs are stupidly pricey.
Yes, the batteries NEVER fire as many pops as the manufacturer claims.
Yes, they are slow lights.
Yes, they are usually built poorly.
Yes, the fail to fire frequently.
So.
BUY A HONDA GENERATOR!!!
AND TAKE YOUR STUDIO LIGHTS
WITH YOU.
Hey hey.
Cheer up.
IF
you buy a generator, you can fill up your tires with air. You can charge a flat car battery.
You can power your computer and charge your iPhone.
Most importantly,
YOU RULE THE WORLD OF LIGHT!
hooooooorrrrrrrayayyyyyyy!
That's what we want.
So here's some light ruling snaps from this week.
For glorious photographs and enjoyable viewing,
feel free to look here at some more PICTURES.

This is a pal named Frida. She was made up and hair worked by Richard.
The location is in Florida. Mighty Hot here in the summer.
But location pictures wherein the snapper rules the light?
OLD TOMATO
('ultimate' in spanish)

Be sure to tune in for some more dullness to the senses next week as BP gets our attention!
